John Henry
John
Henry, the legendary "steel driving man" was a railroad
worker during the 1870s. The story has it that John Henry, a former
slave, worked for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad helping to
build the Great Bend
Tunnel. The tunnel went through the Big Bend Mountains and took
a thousand men and boys three years to finish.
John Henry could do the
work of ten men, so it was said!

and geography as it relates to the C&O Railroad.
